Belton Initiates Stage 1 Drought Conditions

Belton Initiates Stage 1 Drought Conditions

April 24, 2024

droughtstage1The City of Belton is moving from Stage 2 to Stage 1 Drought Conditions thanks to recent rainfall, which increased the water elevation at Belton Lake.

Stage 1 is considered a mild water shortage. It seeks to have water customers voluntarily practice water conservation, such as limiting irrigation to overnight hours twice a week and limiting non-essential uses. Belton and surrounding communities had been in Stage 2, moderate drought conditions, since August 1, 2023.

Belton Lake elevation is the primary driver for drought conditions, which are typically announced by the Brazos River Authority, the entity responsible for managing surface water in the area. Lake Belton’s water elevation is currently six feet above the Stage 2 trigger level of 578.7 feet-mean-sea-level.

“We anticipate Lake Belton will remain above the Stage 2 trigger level for an extended period,” Brazos River General Manager/CEO wrote in a letter to Bell County WCID #1 last week.

The City of Belton continuously monitors the water supply and will produce a similar notification when changes are made or additional action is required.
