Belton City Council Duties
Members of the city council are elected by the people of Belton to serve three-year terms. The mayor and mayor pro tem are city councilmembers who are appointed by the city council and serve one-year terms. The council appoints the city manager, city clerk, city attorney and municipal judge. It appoints citizens to various boards and commissions, and approves the annual budget and ad valorem tax rate. The council develops a Strategic Plan, and establishes fees and rates for city goods and services. As prescribed by city charter and state law, the Council approves purchases and contracts.
