Here’s a statement from Chief Larry Berg:

"It is with a heavy heart that I share that the search for Rogelio Arias has concluded. While searching the Leon River today by kayak, Belton Police Department detectives found Rogelio’s body on the bank of the river, north of Taylors Valley Road. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Rogelio's body was discovered around 2:30 p.m.

Search Continues for Missing Man

rogelio - CopyThe search continues for Rogelio Arias, 79, who has been missing since he walked away from his family’s home on Muelhause Street in Belton on Saturday, March 9. No foul play is suspected.

This week detectives from the Belton Police Department continued to follow up on leads from the public, while also searching areas where Mr. Arias was last seen. New video footage shows Mr. Arias walking northeast on Taylors Valley Road around 12:37 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.

“We know that Mr. Arias walked for at least two miles on the day he went missing,” Chief Larry Berg said. “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts we don’t know much more than that. Still, we remain committed and determined to find him for his family.”

This week, detectives searched aerially with a drone, canvased miles of fields and dense overgrowth by foot, kayaked in nearby bodies of water, and are conducting K9 searches in the area where he was last seen. 

Timeline of Mr. Arias’ known whereabouts on Saturday, March 9:
•    8:09 a.m., Mr. Arias leaves his family’s home in the Miller Heights area of Belton (Ring video)
•    11:47 a.m., Mr. Arias walks east under the I-35 overpass on Central Avenue (video footage from a local business)
•    12:37 p.m., Mr. Arias walks northeast on Taylors Valley Road (video footage from a local business). 

Mr. Arias does not speak English and was not carrying a cellphone. He may be experiencing difficulties with cognitive recall and information retention.

Police Continue to Search for Missing 79-year-old Man

A 79-year-old man is still missing after walking away from his family's home on Muelhause Street in Belton on Saturday morning. Rogelio Arias does not have a cellphone, does not speak English, and may be experiencing difficulties with cognitive recall and information retention. He left the house at 8:09 a.m. Saturday wearing a gray ball cap, black jacket, and blue jeans.

His family released Ring camera video showing him leave the house. The next confirmed sighting of him was recorded on the security camera of a private business near I-35 and Central Avenue around noon on Saturday.

It is unclear if Mr. Arias is still in the area, however, the Belton Police Department has conducted multiple searches for him and continues to follow up on leads. Police also remain in close contact with the family, which said it plans to organize a search party at 4 p.m. today at Yettie Polk Park. Police do not suspect foul play.
