Current Belton City Councilmember John R. Holmes Sr. has filed for Place 1 on the 2021 Belton City Council ballot. Four councilmember terms are expiring, and three other incumbents have filed for places on the ballot: Dan Kirkley (Place 2), Craig Pearson (Place 3) and David K. Leigh (Place 4).
The filing period is open until 5 p.m. on February 12. Potential candidates must file during the filing period to be eligible to run for office. A candidate packet, which includes filing information, is available online for residents interesting in serving on the Belton City Council. The 2021 General Election is scheduled for Saturday, May 1, with Places 1, 2, 3 and 4 up for election.
Following an amendment to the City Charter in 2020, councilmember positions are transitioning from two- to three-year terms, with a places system. For this election, Places 1 and 2 will be two-year terms and Places 3 and 4 will be three-year terms. All future terms will be for three years, as prescribed by the Charter. In December 2020, councilmembers drew lots to determine Places 1-7.
The following councilmember terms expire in May:
- John Holmes (Place 1, two-year term)
- *Dan Kirkley (Place 2, two-year term)
- Craig Pearson (Place 3, three-year term)
- David K. Leigh (Place 4, three-year term)
Councilmembers meet twice a month in regularly scheduled evening meetings. Each councilmember receives $1 annually for his or her service. Visit our Elections Page for more information, including the 2019 Election Calendar.
