Belton FD Shares Tips for Dealing with High Temperatures

BFD Logo - cipThe Belton Fire Department has tips on how to cool down during a heat wave and symptoms to look for in someone who may be overheated.

During heat waves: 
  • Drink more water
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Find a place to cool down -- shade can reduce a body temperature by up to 10 degrees
  • Wear light colored and loose fitting clothing
  • Wear a hat
  • Wear sunscreen

Beware of these symptoms:

  • Heat rash or cramps
  • Heavy sweating or weakness
  • Headache and nausea
  • Lack of sweating despite the heat
  • Red, hot and dry skin
  • Muscle weakness or cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting

How to help someone overcome by heat:

  • Move them to the shade or inside with air conditioning
  • Cool forehead and neck with cool towel
  • Remove excess heavy clothing
  • Place them in front of a fan
  • Call 9-1-1
