During heat waves:
- Drink more water
- Stay out of the sun
- Find a place to cool down -- shade can reduce a body temperature by up to 10 degrees
- Wear light colored and loose fitting clothing
- Wear a hat
- Wear sunscreen
Beware of these symptoms:
- Heat rash or cramps
- Heavy sweating or weakness
- Headache and nausea
- Lack of sweating despite the heat
- Red, hot and dry skin
- Muscle weakness or cramps
- Nausea and vomiting
How to help someone overcome by heat:
- Move them to the shade or inside with air conditioning
- Cool forehead and neck with cool towel
- Remove excess heavy clothing
- Place them in front of a fan
- Call 9-1-1
