Officer Gerry Torres was selected as the Belton Police Department 2017 Officer of the 3rd Quarter for his actions following a fatal traffic accident on Aug. 18.
Belton police responded to a major motor vehicle crash that involved a mother and her 6-year-old child. Both were transported to the hospital by emergency medical personnel, and Officer Torres was assigned to accompany the child as the mother was treated for severe injuries from which she died. Officer Torres showed great support and compassion for the child by staying with him as he was told about the death of his mother and until the child’s family arrived from out of town hours later.
Officer Torres was a servant guardian during this tragic event. On possibly the worst day of the child’s life, he gave the young boy something positive to take away from the tragedy. A pediatric social worker with McLane Children’s Hospital complimented his actions -- its impact upon the child and hospital staff. She said she appreciated the selfless nature of Officer Torres and the department as a whole.
