You may have noticed lately the tap water in Belton has an earthy odor. Belton water provider, Bell County Water Control Improvement District No. 1, has assured us that the WATER IS SAFE TO DRINK and that the water plant continues to meet requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulations.
The odor is a temporary consequence of recent rainfall, which contributed to high inflows into Lake Belton and, more recently, high outflows. The increased motion of the water in Lake Belton has stirred odor causing constituents.
Other communities that receive water from Lake Belton have also noted a change in the smell of the water. Again, the treated water is regularly tested and continues to meet quality standards for consumption.
