RU OK, the Belton Police Department program that reaches out to seniors who have expressed an interest in regular welfare calls, is celebrating its first year of existence. In one year, the calling list has grown from 1 person served to its current total of 24 people.
“This a great program that touches so many lives in meaningful ways," Belton Police Chief Gene Ellis said. "In many cases, it gives seniors social interaction where there is none. I know they look forward to the calls.”
The program is staffed by graduates from the Belton Citizens Police Academy who have chosen to continue to volunteer with the police department.
“We could not do this without our trusted volunteers," Ellis said. "They make this program successful. I know great bonds have been created between volunteers and seniors.”
