A house in the 400 block of S. East St. in Belton was heavily damaged by fire Thursday morning. An elderly woman and her pet dog were able to get out of the house safely, but Belton Fire Chief Francisco Corona said the home is a total loss.
Firefighters received the call at about 8:29 a.m. The first unit on the scene reported flames and smoke coming from the home. It took firefighters about 25 minutes to get the fire under control. Two engines, two medic units and a chief officer, 10 firefighters total, responded to the scene. The fire is still being investigated but is believed to have started in the living room of the house. In the immediate future, the occupant is expected to stay with family members.
